Scholarships & Awards

There are several sources of scholarships and academic awards for students who are majors or minors in the Department of Mathematics. First, students can apply for financial aid as a part of their application for admission to Towson University. Decisions regarding such applications are handled by the University's Admissions and Financial Aid offices. 

Students can also apply for an S-STEM Scholarship in Mathematics, which is open to new and current students who have declared as a mathematics major. This program provides mentorship and additional resources to participants.  Please follow the link below for more information on the program, eligibility, and how to apply.

An additional source of scholarships is the Jess and Mildred Fisher College of Science, which has scholarships for both entering freshmen and current students. 

Finally, there is a group of scholarships and awards that are awarded only by nomination of the Department of Mathematics faculty scholarship committee (students do not apply for any of these scholarships or awards). These are listed below.

Department of Mathematics Scholarships

Award: $500.
Criteria: Undergraduate mathematics major or a graduate student in mathematics. May be based on either financial need, academic achievement, or exceptional talent within a discipline. If the award is based on financial need, a FAFSA will need to be on file with the Financial Aid Office.  
Award: Varies from year to year - approximately $750. One award annually.
Criteria: Undergraduate mathematics major, with at least junior standing and a GPA of 3.0 or higher as of September 1. Special consideration will be given to students preparing to teach secondary school mathematics. Full-time and part-time students are eligible. The award is merit based and has no citizenship requirement.
All student recipients are expected to write a thank you note to the donor representative. 
Award: Varies from year to year - approximately $1500. One or more awards annually.
Criteria: Undergraduate mathematics major, with at least sophomore standing as of September 1.

Criteria: Undergraduate mathematics major, with junior standing as of March 1. The award is based on academic achievement, ability, creativity, and interest in Mathematics. Special consideration will be given to students who have shown a commitment to the Towson University community.
All student recipients are expected to write a thank you note to the donor representative.
Award: A book. One award annually in each of the following areas: Mathematics, Secondary Mathematics Education, Elementary Mathematics Education, and Early Childhood Mathematics Education.
Criteria: Outstanding graduating senior in the respective major: mathematics major, with concentration not in secondary mathematics education; mathematics major, with concentration in secondary mathematics education; elementary education major, with a minor in mathematics; early childhood education major, with a minor in mathematics.
Award: Varies from year to year - approximately $500. One or more awards annually.
Criteria: Full-time junior or senior mathematics major, with a record of academic accomplishments and a potential for and inclination toward graduate study in a mathematical science or toward teaching mathematics at the high school level. The recipient is expected to maintain a full-time course load.
All student recipients are expected to write a thank you note to the donor representative.
Award: $5,000 annually and is renewable up to three additional years as long as the student meets the criteria.  This scholarship alternates between the Mathematics and the Computer and Information Science Departments.
Criteria: Full-time undergraduate student; Enrolled as a Mathematics or Computer Science major; 3.0 cumulative high-school or post-secondary education G.P.A.; and Financial need as defined by the Financial Aid Office. This award is for a mathematics or computer science major who has demonstrated outstanding performance or who has outstanding potential to do well in the major.
