Student Studio Projects

The Department of Theatre Arts accepts proposals from qualified students to produce their own projects. Projects can take a variety of forms such as working with existing scripts and new plays, creating a devised ensemble piece, or developing a one-person show.

Proposals are submitted by a “lead artist". A lead artist can be a designer, an actor, a playwright or a director. From the submitted proposals, the faculty committee reviews the proposals, interviews the applicants, and selects one to three projects to be mounted in the Ruth Marder Theatre the following semester.

In student studio projects, students are the driving force and are responsible for all aspects of producing the work. Each project has a faculty mentor who may have a major or minor role in helping the students, according to the arrangement made between the faculty member and the lead artist.

Lead Artist responsibilities include:

  • Assembling a creative team (auditioning actors, etc.)
  • Coordinating rehearsals, tech and performances
  • Publicity (based on a publicity calendar for posters, programs, etc.)
  • Securing a Stage Manager with the Department TD
  • Securing a rehearsal space

Minimum qualifications:

  • Script Analysis (THEA 125)
  • Directing I (THEA 331)
  • Intro to Design (THEA 142)

Highly recommended qualifications:

  • Directing II (THEA 421)
  • Stage managing a faculty/guest-directing main stage show
  • Assistant Directing a faculty/guest-directed main stage show
