Percussion Ensemble
The Towson University Percussion Ensemble has long enjoyed the status of being one of the most popular performing groups on campus. The ensemble performs music from an enormous range of styles and cultures; past performances have featured music of Eastern-European composers, African drumming, and Halloween concerts (Thing that go Bump in the Night), as well as concerts featuring works by individual composers such as Michael Colgrass, Rich O’Meara, and D. J. Sparr.
Percussion Ensemble provides students with the opportunity to work closely with their private instructors and visiting artists in a chamber setting, opening doors of communication and expression that greatly enhance musical and professional growth. The atmosphere is both serious and fun; this allows for the highest possible levels of performance and commitment.
Students are given opportunities to lead small chamber groups, conduct, and have a sense of ownership in the process of music-making, and are encouraged to compose and arrange pieces for the group to perform.
The ensemble has performed at the MENC All-Eastern Convention, the Percussive Arts Society Maryland/Delaware and Pennsylvania chapters’ Days of Percussion, and the PAS Percussion Ensemble Festival. The ensemble regularly travels to schools throughout the region to perform and present educational workshops for high school percussionists.
