Internships offer an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience, explore and confirm career choices, develop professional contacts, and learn new skills. WMST 496 Internship offers 3 credits of field placement for students in agencies or organizations working on projects that serve women. It requires 100-120 hours of unpaid work. Consult the current Undergraduate Catalog for the prerequisites for the internships.

Internship may be administered through either the Career Center or Women's and Gender Studies. The Career Center maintains a database of internship opportunities in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., areas. If interested, please contact the chair of Women's and Gender Studies, , Liberal Arts 3210C, 410-704-5456. Students interested in registering for WMST 496 must contact Dr. Gissendanner a month before or no later than two weeks prior to the semester in which they plan on doing the internship.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Studies program at Towson University is excited to announce five new internship positions developed in partnership with the LGBT Student Development program in the Center for Student Diversity (CSD) at TU.

Internship Support Grants

To enhance student opportunities for internships in the College of Liberal Arts, the Office of the Dean will offer annually up to ten grants to defray the direct costs of participating in internships when such expenses would represent a particular financial challenge for students. The maximum grant will be $500.

Internship Facts:

  • Internships are for credit (3 to 6 credits per semester, 400-level).
  • Credits will fulfill requirements for the LGBT minor, and will count as upper level credit toward graduation for students, regardless of major or minor.
  • Internships require on-site hours (8 or 16 hrs / week, depending on credit). Contact Dr. Kate Wilkinson for more information on internship opportunities.
  • Internships also require an academic component (paper/project) related to the internship position. This will be coordinated through Dr. Cindy Gissendanner (Director, LGBTQ Studies Minor).
