Pell Grant recipients are eligible for the Gilman International Scholarship
Financial aid can be applied toward TU exchanges, TU programs, and approved non-TU programs but there may be some restrictions depending on the type of aid you receive. Students can request additional loan funds to help cover study abroad/away costs by submitting a Study Abroad/Away Budget to the TU Financial Aid Office. It is also a good idea to schedule an appointment with a Financial Aid Adviser to discuss borrowing options for the abroad or away term.
IMPORTANT: Tuition remission can only be applied to TU Exchanges.
Each year, Towson University awards scholarships to TU students for study abroad experiences. Many external organizations and program providers also offer scholarships for students. Please talk with the TU Study Abroad & Away Office about these opportunities or refer to the organization or provider’s website for details. Below are some scholarship options you may be interested in pursuing.
Open to TU full-time undergraduate and graduate degree-seeking students participating in an international study abroad program. Students participating in domestic study away programs are not eligible to apply. Recipients are required to participate in a study abroad/away related service activity or project (see list of service projects and events) during or after their experience which will be tracked by the Study Abroad & Away Office. Award amounts vary (typically $200 - $1,000). Scholarships are available for the fall, spring, Spring Break, academic year, calendar year, summer, and Minimester.
Deadlines: March 15 (summer, fall, and academic year); October 15 (Minimester, spring, Spring Break, calendar year). Students applying early for study abroad may also apply for the scholarship in the prior cycle.

As part of our commitment to increase access to study abroad for all students, Towson University is proud to offer the TU Institutional Diversity Study Abroad Scholarship. Diversity is defined broadly and can include but is not limited to students of color, first-generation college students, students with disabilities, student athletes, students identifying as LGBTQIA+, non-traditional majors, etc. Open to TU full-time undergraduate and graduate degree-seeking students. Students who receive the TU Institutional Diversity Study Abroad Scholarship are asked to complete their service requirement in a way that provides outreach to underrepresented groups in study abroad. Please contact the Study Abroad & Away Office for more information and outreach ideas. Scholarships are available for the fall, spring, Spring Break, academic year, calendar year, summer, and Minimester. Open to full-time, undergraduate degree-seeking students majoring in a Foreign Language who are studying abroad. Must hold a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and have a demonstrated financial need. $750 award.
Joan Durham King was a senior financial officer at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and traveled to 43 countries. She had a passion for traveling the world, mentoring others, and being a trailblazer as the first woman of color in her position at USAID. This scholarship is open to full-time undergraduate degree-seeking students in their sophomore or junior year who demonstrate a commitment to diversity and equity. Preference will be given to a member of Students Achieve Goals through Education (SAGE) Program, the Black Student Union, or a fraternity or sorority within the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Must hold a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 to apply. Scholarships are available for the fall, spring, Spring Break, academic year, calendar year, summer, and Minimester. Two $500 scholarships are awarded annually. Open to TU full-time undergraduate degree-seeking students pursuing a major in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC). Must hold a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 to apply. Scholarships are available for the fall, spring, Spring Break, academic year, calendar year, summer, and Minimester. Awards range from $2,000 - $4,000. Eligible students participating in an international study abroad program will be automatically considered upon submission of the TU Institutional Study Abroad Scholarship application (see instructions above). Eligible students participating in a domestic study away program should complete the TU COFAC Study Away Scholarship application in .
Open to TU full-time undergraduate degree-seeking students pursuing a major in the College of Liberal Arts. Scholarships are available for the fall, spring, Spring Break, academic year, calendar year, summer, and Minimester. Awards range from $300 - $600. Eligible students will be automatically considered upon submission of the TU Institutional Study Abroad Scholarship application (see instructions above).
Open to TU psychology majors or graduate students in psychology. Must be enrolled full-time. Scholarships are available for the fall, spring, Spring Break, academic year, calendar year, summer, and Minimester. Eligible students will be automatically considered upon submission of the TU Institutional Study Abroad Scholarship application (see instructions above).
Open to all TU undergraduate degree-seeking students. Preference is given to students studying in Latin America. Must hold a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 to apply. Scholarships are available for the fall, spring, Spring Break, academic year, calendar year, summer, and Minimester. Awards range from $300 - $500. Open to TU full-time degree seeking students studying abroad in South Korea. Scholarships are available for the fall, spring, Spring Break, academic year, calendar year, summer, and Minimester. Open to TU full-time undergraduate degree-seeking students participating in the TU in Italy Rome program. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 required. Fall, spring, academic year, or calendar year only. Open to TU full-time undergraduate degree-seeking students participating in the TU in Italy - Florence program. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 required. Lorenzo de'Medici offers small grants based on academic merit and financial need to students attending for a semester, academic year, or calendar year. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 required. For more information, please contact your Study Abroad & Away Advisor.
Open to all TU full-time undergraduate degree-seeking members of the TU Honors College
who are studying abroad. Award amounts vary (~$200-$300). Scholarships are available for the fall, spring, academic year, calendar year, summer
and Minimester. Students must submit an Honors College Study Abroad Scholarship Application Form in order to be considered.
Deadlines: April 1 (summer, fall, and academic year); November 1 (Minimester, spring, Spring
Break, calendar year).
Gilman Scholarships expand opportunities for study abroad for students whose demonstrated financial need might otherwise preclude them from such an experience. The scholarship provides awards to undergraduate students who are eligible for federal Pell Grant funding. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000.
Funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), Boren Fellowships are open to U.S. graduate students studying less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests. Students studying abroad in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are not eligible to apply. Boren Fellowships are awarded for experiences abroad ranging from 12 weeks to 12 months.
Funded by the NSEP, Boren Scholarships are open to U.S. undergraduate degree-seeking students studying in world regions critical to U.S. interests and/or studying less commonly taught languages. Students studying abroad in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are not eligible to apply. Fall, spring, summer (minimum eight weeks - science, technology, engineering, and mathematics students ONLY), academic year.
The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project offers scholarships to U.S. undergraduate degree-seeking students studying abroad in Japan. Fall, spring, academic year.
BUTEX (British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association) offers scholarships for students currently registered at an institution in the USA or Canada. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a place as a study abroad or exchange student at a UK university which is a member of BUTEX for at least one semester. The value of each scholarship is £500 and will be paid to the recipients once they have arrived and registered at their host university.
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program offers fully funded intensive summer language institutes overseas in critical need foreign languages for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master's and Ph.D students. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. The CLS Program does not have any government service requirement upon completion, however, it is expected that participants will continue to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their critical language skills in their future academic and professional careers.
DAAD grants for study and research in Germany are available to faculty and students from Canada and the United States. Scholars participate in a wide variety of academic activities to promote international academic relations and cooperation.
Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.
FEA's mission is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the U.S. study abroad population. FEA makes life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting students of color, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs.
The Gilman-McCain Scholarship) provides awards of $5,000 for child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel during the time of application (including Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army, Army National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Navy, Navy Reserve, Space Force, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and USPHS Commissioned Corps) to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Applicants must be recipients of any type of Title IV federal financial aid during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving Title IV federal financial aid during their study abroad program or internship.
Joy Worldwide Inc. is committed to creating a pathway of self-discovery, cross-cultural connection, and impactful change for individuals and our community. The target audience for the scholarship program is African American college students that are motivated to further their education through study abroad opportunities. Awards range from $500 to $750 and must go towards your study abroad program and incidentals.
The awards made on the basis of academic merit and are open to: Italian American students, and students from any ethnic background majoring or minoring in Italian language, Italian studies, Italian American studies or a related field.
Offers multiple types of scholarships to NSCS members, including specific scholarships for students studying abroad (Scholar Abroad Scholarship and Scholar at Sea Scholarship).
Open to residents of the State of Maryland studying abroad at Carl Von Ossietsky University in Oldenburg, Germany. Winners will receive €200 per month during their studies at the University of Oldenburg. To apply, submit the following to the TU Study Abroad & Away Office: one page essay describing your degree program including your major and courses taken; official transcript, a letter from your German language professor describing your language ability; a letter of recommendation from a professor. Application deadlines: October 15 for spring, March 15 for fall.
The St. Andrew Society of Washington D.C. awards the Donald Malcolm MacArthur Scholarship of $2,500 to an American student studying in Scotland. Students do not need to be a member of this society to apply, but must be a resident in the Mid-Atlantic region (District of Columbia, the States of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, West Virginia, and the Commonwealths of Pennsylvania and Virginia) and be of Scottish birth or descent. There are multiple chapters of the St. Andrew Society for those that do not reside in the Mid-Atlantic region.
TCA provides up to 100 scholarships per year for minority students. Must be full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing. Must be accepted to a language program or university study abroad program in Turkey, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, or Bosnia and Herzegovina. Applicants should be U.S. Citizens or permanent residents.
The Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship Fund/Toshizo Watanabe Study Abroad Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to undergraduate and graduate students for a semester or year-long study abroad program in Japan. The program is designed to assist students for whom study abroad would not be possible without financial support. Award amounts are determined by financial need and other qualifications up to the full cost of attendance to the study abroad program of the applicant’s choice.
